What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is a system that combines four components: reasoning (an LLM that can plan, interpret goals, and make judgment calls), tool use (the ability to act on external systems through APIs, databases, and services), memory (structured context that persists across interactions and encodes domain knowledge), and orchestration (the ability to coordinate multi-step workflows with failure handling and human escalation). How is an AI agent different from a chatbot?
A chatbot responds to messages. An agent pursues goals. A chatbot takes your input and generates output, one turn at a time, no memory of what happened yesterday, no ability to do anything except generate text. An agent takes a goal, breaks it into steps, executes those steps using tools, observes the results, and adapts when something goes wrong. The distinction is not intelligence. How is an AI agent different from automation?
